The course is designed for intermediate to expert photographers who want to expand their knowledge into astro and night photography. We are specialising in Sony equipment for this weekend although every brand is welcome.

Rareview Photography
Award Winning Landscape and Astro Photographer Levin Barrett (APS Associate) will be guiding and educating you in the unique skills of astrophotography. Levin has been delivering training to pilots and engineers in the Aviation industry for 20 years. Combined with his wealth of astrophotography knowledge and experience, he is well able to pass on the concepts and technical knowledge to you in an easy to understand format.
Greg Thomas Photography
Greg has a wealth of Sony knowledge and experience. I doubt there are any Sony cameras or lenses that Greg does not currently or previously owned. Creator and Administrator of the Sony Alpha Melbourne and Sony Alpha Australia Facebook group, Greg has an intimate knowledge of Sony gear, is an exceptional photographer in his own right and years of training experience. Greg will be assisting Levin with the onsite photography and support for you.
Levin Barrett
We open the training with a discussion on general principles and why astro photography is so different to general photography and why you need to approach it back to front. We then discuss the equipment and accessories you need, the camera settings you should use and composition and focusing techniques. We then move onto lighting techniques and foregrounds.

We meet at our 1st location for our Astro Shoot and we begin putting our new found knowledge into practise. Levin and Greg will assist you with setup, guidance and any questions you have. The Milky Way will be at it’s best from about 9:30 till 1:00am.
Levin Barrett
After a morning to sleep in and an optional get together brunch, we again meet at the Tropicana Motor Inn for part 2 of your training. This afternoon we cover post processing of images in Lightroom. Topaz and Photoshop and then tackle some more advanced astro photography like star trails and blended images. Time permitting, we can even touch on star tracking and panoramas.

Again we head out on location and this time capture the images we need for our star trails and blended compositions.

We meet for breakfast and your final chance to chat, compare stories and ask questions. If you cancel, we will re-advertise the position on the workshop and if a replacement is found – full refund. If no replacement is found then NO REFUND is given. If we can rebook accommodation and cancel meals that reduces the overall cost then we will refund what we can.
If you need to cancel due to catching Covid just prior to the workshop, a full refund will be issued. A medical certificate will be required as evidence.
If we cancel the workshop, we will reschedule the workshop to a later time. If you are unable to attend on the new dates you will receive a full refund.
The workshop is located at Phillip Island, Victoria. The astro shoots will be conducted at various locations on or near Phillip Island.

Astro photography is obviously very weather dependant. If the weather prevents astro photography, we will still run the daytime course and reschedule the astro night shoot for another time and will be advised on the Sony Alpha Facebook Group. We will organise a short fill in season on the nights affected on general topics like post processing, composition, timelapse or more detailed astro photography as the group would like.
